CWN staffer qualifies for national poetry slam final.
On Saturday 12th September, in the Bluenote Arts Centre in Liverpool, CWN Development Manager Mark Madden managed to not only qualify for the final, but win the Radio 4 Poetry Slam semi-final in Liverpool, taking joint first place overall. The semi-final was recorded for Radio 4 and will be broadcast on:
Thursday 24th September on Radio 4 at 11pm, so check it out... a very, very hard fought evening. It was a great night. The Bluenote had around 200 guests in their excellent performance space and the nine competitors from Northern Britain and Northern Ireland gave some stunning performances. Abby Olivieri of the Poetry Chicks in Derry and Scott Tyrell of Newcastle’s Poetry Vandals both made it to the last round, but got pipped at the post. We’re really looking forward to catching the edited version on the radio next week. Terribly exciting.
Mark will now be off to the final in The Conservatoire in Birmingham on October 6th. This event is part of the Birmingham Book Festival. The Conservatoire seats five hundred and they are expecting a full house, so it should be a great atmosphere. There are six poets in the final from all over the UK and Ireland. All are previous slam winners, and all have got through two regional slams to reach the final. This will be a display of some of the finest live poetry currently being performed on these islands. Tune in and find out why performance poetry is the world’s fastest growing artform.
The final will be broadcast on:
National Poetry Day, Thursday 8th October on Radio 4 at 11pm
Both programmes will be available to stream or download from the Radio 4 website for seven days after broadcast.
