I've just listened to a show on the radio about political correctness. Here's a link to it: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00dvhmr/PC_RIP_Episode_1/It raised some interesting points. Ultimately I've always felt that though political correctness is very well meaning and does overcome some obstacles. It doesn't win the battle against prejudice. People just learn a new language and social rules, but ultimately most (in my experience) still keep their prejudices. I think the big problem is that it doesn't win the war. It is also hampered by idiots adding unnecessary bad words. I know a teacher who isn't allowed to say "brainstorm" in class because it may offend epileptics. That's just stupid. In my own writing I've often challenged political correctness and tried to make the reader/listener analyse their own attitudes towards various subjects. This is from a point of view that what ultimately needs to be tackled is the attitude to the subject. Changing the language is only the basis for this and should not be the end result. I'd love to hear other writers opinions on this.
