Wow... What a surprisingly fantastic night it was too.
How can I put it??? A really fantastic selection of poets! and great poems to boot... I spent most of the time sitting on the floor but it was well worth it for a night that one hopes will help to promote poetry. Espicially for those students who were there... The place was packed to the rafters
And the new folk that came got an eye-opener...
Most surprisingly was the fact that most poets (espicially the more established ones) who stuck their names down on the list got called up first which had a few of them unprepared... But they came through!
Gerard opened up with a selection of his stuff which caught everyones attention and brought the cafe to a quietness with the occasional laughter that showed that they genuinely were there for the poetry. A few more poets later then there was a break (Not dissing the other poets, they sure as hell packed their own punches), after which Brian Bailey came on with an introduction of which a legend was worthy off. Again the mood was settled with Masterful words and worthy applause...
Before I left (10:30pm, to get a bus to work!) I got up with a rough drafted version of a poem I penned during a break (It's sitting in the Criticism section if ya wanna nosey) and followed up with A Beautiful Goth (Of course with permission from Gerard) which I have to say I think I may have overplayed to the point that I had actually managed to scare a lady in the audience into anothers arms! (If this wasn't the case, then my eyes were playing tricks!) But Gerard found it interesting how I carried it off compared to him.
I'm hoping it comes off well (if not, better) for tonight!
Sadly I wasn't able to stay for the end, but I sure as hell wish I did!
Makes me wish that Bookies went back to it's original format in a way... But I sincerely hope that if anything, it brings a new generation of poets into Belfast.
A worthy night of poetry and meeting new faces, and most deserving of being mentioned as probably one of the best nights this poetry year!

Completely agreed. It was great to see loads of new faces, as well as a few regulars in there. It was strange seeing myself covered (just cause it is) I thought Silverfox did a class version of the Beautiful Goth, putting his own spin on it too, which was a nice touch. Hopefully more will follow.

Oh it was wonderful. it warms my heart to see a new generation of poets emerging and rampant at Bookys. It was always part of the plan to allow it tio evolve and grow. There is still more poetry there than before and it is a better mix of open mic and selected readers. Vive le Bookys and how nice to see ORDINARY poets enjoying a non structured event instead of the self annointed specialist who disregard any poetry that doesnt deal with political issues or promote the international brother/sisterhood of lost causes./ LOL. KEEP THER FLAG FLYING bOOKYS. sTEPHEN cONNOLLY THE NEW CONVENOR IS A CHAMPION OF THE SPOKEN WORD AND HE HAS BEEN QUIETLY SITTING IN THE CORNER OF bOOKYS FOR YEARS . nOW HE IS LEADING THE YOUNG TURKS TO GLORY. excellent.
